Oral History Contribution – Phyllis Rhodes and Victor
Carlson
Phyllis Rhodes and Victor Carlson are long-time Alaskans
who have been influential leaders in Anchorage for many
years. Both have worked hard to promote the well-being of
the LGBTQ Community. In addition to her other activities,
Phyllis was the Executive Director of the community
center, Identity, Inc., from 2005 to 2014. Victor was a
member of the Identity, Inc. Board from 1998 to 2008.
In this video, filmed in January 2023, both discuss their
coming out, what they learned from that experience, and
the changes it has made to their lives. An important point
from both has been the value of a community center and its
activities, especially to members of the Gay Community, in
providing a place to be out and be yourself.
Our thanks to Alexis "Alex" Anoruk Sallee,
Director and Producer of Inua Productions, who produced
this video and has made it available to Out in Alaska.
